Beginner Sky Objects

Classify an image from structure and context, then separate what the pixels show from what spectroscopy, distance measurements or models establish.

Reviewed 10 October 2026 · Suggested time: 45 minutes

Start with four evidence questions

  1. 1

Shape: Is the light diffuse, concentrated into points, or organized into a disk?

  2. 2

Scale: Is a quoted field of view or distance available? Apparent size alone does not reveal physical size.

  3. 3

Bandpass: Which filters or wavelengths made the image? Display color may be mapped rather than seen by the eye.

  4. 4

Context: Does the record identify an instrument, target and observation date?

Classification is provisional

A galaxy may contain dust lanes and bright star-forming regions; a nebula may contain a compact cluster; a supernova remnant may look filamentary. Morphology supports a candidate label, but redshift, spectra, proper motion or multiwavelength data usually provide the stronger test.

Completion task

Write an evidence card

Choose three Atlas images. For each, record target, instrument, filters, apparent structure, proposed class and one observation that would challenge your classification. Do not infer true color, distance or composition from display color alone.

Beginner Sky Objects / observation pipeline

INPUT

Photons

Identify wavelength, exposure, field of view and observing date before reading the image.

STAGE A

Detector

Separate object signal from point-spread function, noise, saturation and selection.

STAGE B

Calibration

Track background removal, alignment, scaling and color mapping as part of the measurement.

OUTPUT

Physical claim

Connect “Start with four evidence questions” to “Classification is provisional” through an explicit model.

PRIMARY READOUT

Classify an image from structure and context, then separate what the pixels show from what spectroscopy, distance measurements or models establish.

MODEL WARNING

Identify the detector, wavelength range, angular resolution, calibration and processing steps before treating visual structure as physical structure. Projection, distance, extinction or adopted parameters may offer another explanation.

CROSS-CHECK

Query NASA Science: Nebulae and NASA Science: Galaxies and seek an independent wavelength, spectrum, motion or catalogue measurement.

CONFIDENCE_PROTOCOL

For Beginner Sky Objects, label each statement as pixel-level observation, calibrated measurement, model-dependent inference or open hypothesis. Advance a claim only when the preceding stage is documented.
