Direct observation

What the pixels show

The mosaic records brightness through selected filters. Bright emission surrounds the Trapezium; darker lanes cross the luminous gas; compact silhouettes occur in the field. Brightness and displayed color depend on exposure, filter response, processing, and the chosen color mapping.

Interpretation

What evidence adds

Spectra and filter-sensitive emission identify ionized gas, while higher-resolution studies connect some compact silhouettes with externally illuminated protoplanetary disks. The image alone does not provide a three-dimensional distance for every feature.

Method limit

How the mosaic was made

Hubble combined many pointings and filters. Adjacent colors are not necessarily materials a human eye would see from nearby; they are an editorial and scientific mapping of measured bands.

Atlas task

Observation or interpretation?

Write one sentence describing only a visible brightness or shape pattern, then one sentence interpreting it with evidence from the source record. Name one measurement you would need to test the interpretation.

Check: “A dark oval lies against bright gas” is an observation. “It is a protoplanetary disk” is an interpretation requiring spatially resolved imaging or spectra.

INPUT

Photons

Identify wavelength, exposure, field of view and observing date before reading the image.

STAGE A

Detector

Separate object signal from point-spread function, noise, saturation and selection.

STAGE B

Calibration

Track background removal, alignment, scaling and color mapping as part of the measurement.

OUTPUT

Physical claim

Connect “Overview” to “Star Formation” through an explicit model.

PRIMARY READOUT

A spectacular stellar nursery located 1,344 light-years away, where over 700 young stars are actively forming from dense clouds of gas and dust.

MODEL WARNING

Compare emission, absorption and scattered light across wavelengths; apparent color and sharp edges depend on filters, ionization and foreground dust. Projection, distance, extinction or adopted parameters may offer another explanation.

CROSS-CHECK

Query ESA/Hubble: Orion Nebula mosaic and NASA Science: planet-forming disks in Orion and seek an independent wavelength, spectrum, motion or catalogue measurement.

CONFIDENCE_PROTOCOL

For Orion Nebula, label each statement as pixel-level observation, calibrated measurement, model-dependent inference or open hypothesis. Advance a claim only when the preceding stage is documented.
