Pixel evidence

What the frame supports

Opaque and translucent columns cross a dense field of point sources. Bright edges and small red features appear near pillar boundaries, but morphology alone does not date individual stars.

Rendering

Filters and star shapes

Assigned colors combine near-infrared filters. Prominent spikes around bright stars are telescope diffraction patterns, not jets or physical rays extending from those stars.

Evidence boundary

Formation versus feedback

The image shows young-star candidates and eroded cloud structure in projection. Demonstrating ages, motions and causal feedback requires spectroscopy, repeated imaging and physical models.

Atlas task

Test your reading

Find one diffraction pattern, one cloud edge and one embedded-looking point source. Label each as observation, then state what further measurement its interpretation requires.

INPUT

Photons

Identify wavelength, exposure, field of view and observing date before reading the image.

STAGE A

Detector

Separate object signal from point-spread function, noise, saturation and selection.

STAGE B

Calibration

Track background removal, alignment, scaling and color mapping as part of the measurement.

OUTPUT

Physical claim

Connect “Iconic Cosmic Structure” to “Star Formation Process” through an explicit model.

PRIMARY READOUT

Iconic columns of interstellar gas and dust in the Eagle Nebula, standing 4-5 light-years tall and actively forming new stars within their dense cores.

MODEL WARNING

Compare emission, absorption and scattered light across wavelengths; apparent color and sharp edges depend on filters, ionization and foreground dust. Projection, distance, extinction or adopted parameters may offer another explanation.

CROSS-CHECK

Query NASA Webb: Pillars of Creation and seek an independent wavelength, spectrum, motion or catalogue measurement.

CONFIDENCE_PROTOCOL

For Pillars of Creation, label each statement as pixel-level observation, calibrated measurement, model-dependent inference or open hypothesis. Advance a claim only when the preceding stage is documented.
