Evidence brief

How Weak-Lensing Mass Maps Are Built

Background-galaxy shapes are measured statistically, corrected for the telescope and atmosphere, and inverted into a projected mass estimate.

The image is not a photograph of dark matter

Gravitational lensing changes apparent galaxy shapes. The weak signal is much smaller than each galaxy's intrinsic ellipticity, so surveys average many sources and model point-spread-function distortions. A convergence or mass map is a reconstruction from those measurements under cosmological and redshift assumptions.

Evidence chain

  1. 1

Detect sources and measure shapes in calibrated exposures.

  2. 2

Model instrument and atmospheric blurring; test residual systematics.

  3. 3

Estimate source-redshift distributions and shear calibration.

  4. 4

Reconstruct projected mass and quantify noise, masks and smoothing.

Reading task

Interrogate a map caption

Record survey area, source density, redshift range, smoothing scale, signal-to-noise convention and mask. Then ask whether an apparent peak persists across alternative reconstructions and null tests.

Dark Matter Map / observation pipeline

INPUT

Photons

Identify wavelength, exposure, field of view and observing date before reading the image.

STAGE A

Detector

Separate object signal from point-spread function, noise, saturation and selection.

STAGE B

Calibration

Track background removal, alignment, scaling and color mapping as part of the measurement.

OUTPUT

Physical claim

Connect “Discovery Overview” to “Gravitational Lensing Technique” through an explicit model.

PRIMARY READOUT

New gravitational lensing data has created the most detailed map of dark matter distribution across the universe, revealing the cosmic web's intricate structure.

MODEL WARNING

Lensing maps reconstruct projected mass through a model and source-shape statistics; smoothing and redshift assumptions affect the apparent peaks. Projection, distance, extinction or adopted parameters may offer another explanation.

CROSS-CHECK

Query Chang et al. (2018), Dark Energy Survey Year 1 mass maps and NASA Science: Dark matter and dark energy and seek an independent wavelength, spectrum, motion or catalogue measurement.

CONFIDENCE_PROTOCOL

For Dark Matter Map, label each statement as pixel-level observation, calibrated measurement, model-dependent inference or open hypothesis. Advance a claim only when the preceding stage is documented.
