Discovery brief
Polluted White Dwarfs and Planetary Debris
Heavy-element absorption can reveal external material in a white dwarf atmosphere, but converting line strengths into the composition of a parent body requires atmosphere and diffusion models.
Under the high surface gravity, heavy elements sink on model-dependent timescales; persistence can therefore indicate recent or ongoing external supply.
For systems such as G29-38, infrared excess and disk models support circumstellar debris in addition to atmospheric metal lines.
Relative abundances can constrain accreted rocky material only after accounting for atmosphere type, diffusion, accretion phase and measurement uncertainty.
A single abundance pattern may not uniquely recover one parent body. Accretion history, mixing and detection thresholds shape the inferred population.

Do not collapse the chain
Separate four steps: measured spectral line, inferred atmospheric abundance, modeled accretion history, and interpretation of the parent body. State the assumption introduced at each step.

Physical claim
Connect “Discovery Overview” to “Methods & Evidence” through an explicit model.
Metal lines in otherwise pristine white-dwarf atmospheres record recent accretion of shattered planetesimals, offering a direct chemical census of disrupted planetary material.
Color, spectrum, luminosity and evolutionary state are related but not interchangeable; distance and extinction shape where an object appears in a diagram. Projection, distance, extinction or adopted parameters may offer another explanation.
