How to read it
Distance is in megaparsecs. Apparent magnitude is inverted, so a point higher on the chart is brighter as seen by the observer. Hover to compare the supplied absolute magnitude.

galaxy is a placeholder ID; distance_mpc is distance in megaparsecs; apparent_magnitude is observed magnitude; and absolute_magnitude is the teaching value at the standard 10 parsec reference distance.
The six “NGC A-F” entries are invented examples, not NED objects or measurements. The exercise omits bandpass, K-corrections, extinction, cosmology, uncertainty and selection effects. Do not cite it as observational evidence.
Try it yourself
Compare two rows whose absolute magnitudes differ. Explain why the more distant example can still have a similar apparent magnitude, then name the missing bandpass information.

Identify wavelength, exposure, field of view and observing date before reading the image.
Separate object signal from point-spread function, noise, saturation and selection.
Track background removal, alignment, scaling and color mapping as part of the measurement.
Connect “Understanding the Relationship” to “Cosmic Distance Ladder” through an explicit model.
Explore the relationship between galaxy distances and their apparent magnitudes, revealing patterns in cosmic structure and luminosity.
Separate projected morphology from three-dimensional structure, and connect rotation, stellar populations, gas and distance measurements through independent observations. Projection, distance, extinction or adopted parameters may offer another explanation.
Query NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database and seek an independent wavelength, spectrum, motion or catalogue measurement.
