Object Atlas / NGC 7635

Bubble Nebula

The bright shell is observed structure; interpreting it as gas swept up by a massive star's wind also depends on spectroscopy and physical models.

Pixel evidence

What the image supports

A thin curved rim surrounds darker projected material, and the bright star is offset from the apparent center. Brightness traces recorded emission in selected filters, not gas density alone.

Rendering

How color works

Narrowband exposures isolate emission associated with ionized species and are mapped to display colors. The palette is a scientific visualization; it is not a naked-eye view or a direct temperature map.

Evidence boundary

What one frame cannot show

A two-dimensional image does not determine the shell's full three-dimensional shape, expansion speed or line-of-sight position. Those claims require spectra, repeated observations and modeling.

Atlas task

Test your reading

Mark the rim, star and dense ridge. Write one sentence based only on pixels, then a separate wind-bubble interpretation and the extra measurement needed to test it.

INPUT

Photons

Identify wavelength, exposure, field of view and observing date before reading the image.

STAGE A

Detector

Separate object signal from point-spread function, noise, saturation and selection.

STAGE B

Calibration

Track background removal, alignment, scaling and color mapping as part of the measurement.

OUTPUT

Physical claim

Connect “Overview” to “Wind, Shell & Ridges” through an explicit model.

PRIMARY READOUT

NGC 7635 is a wind-blown bubble where a hot O-type star carves a glowing shell through denser interstellar gas in Cassiopeia.

MODEL WARNING

Compare emission, absorption and scattered light across wavelengths; apparent color and sharp edges depend on filters, ionization and foreground dust. Projection, distance, extinction or adopted parameters may offer another explanation.

CROSS-CHECK

Query NASA: Hubble Sees a Star Inflating a Giant Bubble and seek an independent wavelength, spectrum, motion or catalogue measurement.

CONFIDENCE_PROTOCOL

For Bubble Nebula, label each statement as pixel-level observation, calibrated measurement, model-dependent inference or open hypothesis. Advance a claim only when the preceding stage is documented.
